I got an email from a friend of mine the other day and I can’t seem to let it go. She is a beautiful woman, inside and out, but has been beaten down so many times her spirit is deflated. It’s been said that writers espouse wisdom on the very topic they need most and my life has continually validated that statement. I lived so many years where she is right now and identify with her struggle, so I hope that she can find some comfort in what I’m about to say. Perspective is everything.

I always hated when someone would say to me,

Just pick yourself up by your bootstraps and get on with your life. How could they understand what I was going through? It’s not an easy task to change where you are, especially when your energy is drained from the constant battle. The insecurities took years to grow and take root.

So can we really ever change things when the events in our lives keep pushing us down? The answer is an unequivocal YES! We can reprogram the default in our minds and derail old beliefs. We can surround ourselves with positive influences and constantly remind ourselves of our possibilities instead of our disabilities. Years of pain take time to unravel, but patience, persistence and a belief that our dreams can come true will allow them to unfold. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we believe we deserve the best, we will very likely get it.

I believe there is an innate passion within us all to not just survive, but to thrive. It is the moments of our lives that are the essence of that passion. Our spirit is never extinguished. It sleeps within us all waiting patiently for a spark to re-ignite smoldering embers. We can tap into the inner light at our core and when we do, the glow of its radiance warms our spirit, energizes us and touches the lives of those around us.Life is a beautiful gift but it is limited in duration. I wasted far too much time, lost in the pages of my life and I let my story happen to me. Like Rip Van Winkle, I slept through years, waking to find much of my life behind me, but I have learned that if we wait until some event to change things, or let fear prevent us from following our dreams, we will find ourselves at the end of the ride surrounded only by broken memories and regret.

It’s only when we look at what we CAN do instead of focusing on what’s going wrong, that we begin to change our circumstances.

To my friend, GOD works in mysterious ways, but he never gives us more than we can handle. Maybe you have to go through this to help someone else in the future. You’re an amazing woman!  Believe it. You can get through this!
