Its been said that one person can’t really make a difference in the scheme of things, but history tells us a different story. Like each of us, every famous person, good or bad came into this world with a clean slate. From the moment of birth and throughout our lives, the people and events around us develop our frame of reference and mold who we become. We all have the ability to impact the world — and how we do that comes from our choices. We have choices! We can choose who and what to believe in — surround ourselves with — spend our energy on. We can empower others to steal our thunder and drain our lives or to inspire and motivate us.
A very dear friend of mine, Patty Miller, posted the above video on her Facebook site and in doing so, she made a difference. Now I would like to pay it forward. The message from the author is amazing. What we believe, and put into life is what we will get out of it and every single one of us can make a difference — even if you only touch one single soul at a time.
This childhood story exemplifies my premise and I’ve always cherished it:
The Starfish Story
There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and
throwing them back into the sea. The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water. He asked “Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?” The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. “But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!” exclaimed the young man. “How can you make any difference?” The old man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety of the sea, he said,
“ I can make a difference to this one!”
Some could argue that one person rarely makes a difference in the scheme of things, but I believe they can and they do every day. That’s what it’s all about, BELIEF. If you believe in yourself you can make a difference. Don’t empower others to deflate your hopes and dreams. We can all make the world a better place one starfish at a time. (Thanks Patty!)
