Our emotions are the forces that drive our thoughts and behavior, so keep your emotions at bay and focus on possibilities, not obstacles. Happiness isn’t a future event we wait to have happen, but rather a choice, a state of mind created by our attitude and it is within us all if we just tap into its source. You can begin to discover a powerful resource within your soul if you
<!—more—>can overcome self-doubt, squelch the urge to dwell in the negative and embrace change.
As humans we are vulnerable and resistant to change. This is evident in the staggering number of individuals, women and men, who stay in abusive relationships, and dead end jobs. The economy has taken it’s toll on most of us, but as bad as your circumstances may be, sometimes the most difficult obstacle is to let go of what we know and move forward. Known demons are less frightening than unknown and so we become victims and create convincing reasons to wallow in self-pity by staying in toxic situations. When you give up on your dreams the anguish can fester within you and it affects every aspect of your life.
In his first inaugural address, Franklin D. Roosevelt said: “let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. He was speaking, of course, in 1933 and referring to the pessimistic economic conditions during the Great Depression, but his reasoning was sound for any situation. We can’t be afraid to live our lives in fear of the future. It paralyzes us and prevents us from embracing change.
Its important to remember, life by definition is continual change. For better or worse, change will happen. The good news is that we don’t have to stand idly by; we don’t have to be victims. Your reasons for living in anguish are not unique. They are not different from or worse than those met and overcome by countless other people. Whatever excuse you harbor, trust that with very little effort, you will discover it has been challenged and conquered by someone else. We are all in this together — don’t fear what life has to offer. If the economy has dumped on you, embrace the opportunity to change your life.
