The Truth About Branding Yourself

Branding yourself is a giant step towards success for an unknown author, but yesterday Jim Bouchard reminded me that first you have to decide what you’re trying to become. Do you want to write to tell stories and paint a canvas in the minds of others, or are you writing to share a message to the world? Where do you see yourself in five years? The answer to those questions make a huge difference in how you brand yourself.

I love to write, but I also have a message that I’m passionate about, and I believe it is life-altering. For me, the decision was easy. I’ll always write, and I have many more books in my head––fiction and nonfiction––but for now, my message takes precedence. That’s why I have changed the venue of “Birthing a Book or an Author?” from my blog site to my web site. I’ll still have both blogs, but I’m keeping them separate so my branding is clear.

The messages on my blog site will continue to be focused on relationships, self-esteem, letting go of the past, finding passion, and pursuing dreams. That is my brand. But I’m also an author, so my roller coaster ride will continue on this, my website blog.

I have found that it’s not easy to break in to the industry as a new author, but determining your purpose will give you better focus. Whichever you decide, absorb as much as you can in your area of expertise. If you’re a fiction writer, network with successful authors in your genre. For non-fiction, look for successful people in your area of expertise and network with them. As you learn and connect with more and more people, you’ll find yourself catapulted into the world .

Here is the best advice I can give you: Join local groups and get involved in social media discussions. Facebook is more social so keep it social and keep your advertising at a minimum. LinkedIn is professional, so get involved in groups and join in the discussions. Twitter is short and sweet. Find like minds and follow them, but don’t forget to communicate with them. Google your genre and network with the cream of the crop. It’s not easy, but it is essential for your success in this new technological world.

I’m still trying to figure out how to add your comment on this site, so for now you can either leave them on Facebook or just email me by clicking on the icon below.
