Bringing Settings to Life—For Real!
Fiction is made-up stuff, right? Well, mostly. Some authors use real locations for their novels, as I have done with my new series set in Lake George, N.Y. It’s a place where my family and I vacationed almost every summer while I was growing up, so there are lots of wonderful memories I can draw on to create my stories.
My previous release is set in another very real place, Loch Sheldrake, N.Y., which is memorable for an entirely different reason. Having grown up near there, my husband shared an urban legend with me about the lake (yes, it’s really called a loch, just like Loch Ness). No sea monster, but a sinister history nonetheless. It’s rumored that because of its remote location and extreme depth, the Mafia used to drop bodies in Loch Sheldrake chained to juke boxes or wearing, as they called them, “cement overshoes.”
Of course, my crazy wild imagination took off with that rumor, and Hearts Unloched was born.
While visiting the area this past weekend for a signing, we stopped in at Bum & Kel’s, a bar and grill on the lake’s shores for the past 43 years. They have a marvelous new deck, and while we sipped our beers looking out over the lake, my sister/cover designer/graphic artist Terri Del Negro pointed across the water and said, “That’s where it was, right? The Redman Resort?”
Redman’s Resort is the haunted hotel in Hearts Unloched. I squinted at the dirt path describing a boat ramp leading down to the water, and the white-paneled patio. Far from a resort, or hotel. I looked at her and said, “Huh?”
The next morning, Terri sent me this picture.
She’d created Redman’s from a photo she snapped with her phone. Voila. My imaginary hotel, brought to life with postcard reality.
Wow. And I thought I had an imagination!
