Do You Believe In Ghosts?
I’m thrilled to be back for a second feature on Authors Baring All, and this post happens to fall on an emotional day for me because February 22nd is my mother’s birthday. She lost her battle with cancer when she was 52 and I was 25. Although I miss her terribly every day, this date brings a surge of both happy memories from childhood as well as painful reminders of all the moments she’s missed over the years.
Although most of my novels include some type of mysterious haunting, I have never actually seen a ghost. I’ve always believed that some type of spiritual energy lingers, even after a person is gone, but I had never had an experience that solidified this belief until about five years ago, in December of 2011.
I had a particularly joyous Christmas that year, because I had just received my first publishing contract for my debut novel SILVER LAKE. I was also in the midst of writing my second manuscript, GULL HARBOR, which has a medium as a heroine. So when I heard there was a medium at a Christmas party I was attending, I was eager to speak with him. What an amazing opportunity to conduct some research in a casual setting!
This medium, a friend of a friend, seemed amenable to discussing his work. But as I asked him general questions pertaining to his talent, he seemed distracted. Finally, he said, “There’s someone here to speak with you. Is that okay?”
With a nod and a gulp, I listened to what he had to say. It wasn’t exact sentences, but I immediately knew who it was—my mother. I had never met this man—in fact, I lived in a town two hours away. I didn’t pay him a dime, before or after our conversation. But he was hitting details of my life spot-on, including a recent trip I made with my kids to deliver Christmas presents to our local animal shelter (Mom and I shared a love of all animals).
There were so many things he said that sent shivers down my spine, but at one point he kept saying, “Wild Flowers? I’m getting wild flowers.” And then it clicked for me: my biggest dream had recently come true—I had sold my manuscript to The Wild Rose Press.
This experience really made an impression on me, especially since the medium wanted nothing in exchange for sharing these messages. It gave me such joy to think that on some level, my mom is aware of the meaningful events in my life. Perhaps she watches over all the grandchildren she’s never met (five with one more on the way). But I also hope she is resting in peace, free from pain and worry.
Unfortunately, the ghosts in my novels are never resting in peace—at least initially. They have unfinished business here on earth, which is why these desperate spirits struggle to expose the truth behind their mysterious deaths…usually a truth someone else wants to keep hidden. But aside from the spooky suspense, my books are also romances…so readers can be assured of a happy ending eventually. The book I was writing when I spoke to the medium, GULL HARBOR, is set in a fictional town on Cape Cod, where I now live. If you’d like to try it, please find the links below.
