Bitter Legacy

ABA Presents a New Release by C.B. Clark

Bitter Legacy

Can they overcome a villain determined to destroy both their lives?

Bitter Legacy

Sharla-Jean Bromley returns to her hometown after a seventeen-year absence with vengeance in her heart. From the very beginning, her plans go awry when she meets devastatingly handsome Josh Morgan, the man to whom her father left half of his multi-million dollar lumber mill.

Josh, suspicious of Sharla-Jean’s reasons for returning to town after such a long absence, vows to keep control of the company he feels is rightfully his. She is equally determined to prove she can run her father’s mill, even though it means working side-by-side with Josh, a man whose very presence evokes an attraction that is increasingly difficult for her to ignore. In the process, they must overcome a villain who’s determined to destroy both the lumber mill and their lives.

Will Sharla-Jean succeed and heal the anguish that has long filled her soul? Will he and Josh find the passion of a lifetime?

Bitter Legacy Excerpt:

Fire!

Even as the dreaded word reared like a monster inside her head, a thin trickle of smoke crept out of the dark storage room. Terrifying images of flame, smoke and searing heat threatened to overwhelm her. For a nightmare second, she was back in the midst of scorching heat and roaring flames.

Using all her strength of will, she tore free of the chilling memories. Instead of fleeing, she placed one wobbly step in front of the other and shuffled toward the storage room. Her nostrils flared at the acrid tang of gasoline and smoke. With a shaking hand, she gripped the door handle and opened the door.

A figure burst out of the darkness, crashing into her, knocking her back.

She yelped at the pain of the blow and the shock of falling. A jolt of agony and blinding light as her head hit something hard.

Heavy boots pounded across the tile floor. Cold air washed over her. And then darkness.

To everything there is a season Live your Dreams

To Everything There Is A Season

To Everything There Is A Season

Recently, I’ve experienced a season of change. The journey I am on now is far different from where I imagined I’d be at this stage of my life. Some of the changes are of my own making, others were made for me, regardless here I am and here I must learn to flourish. As the saying goes, it’s time I pulled up my big girl pants and got over it. To everything there is a season.

When your life takes an enormous detour it can be shattering, no matter one’s age. My detour came at a time when I was already vulnerable and for months it was all I could do to get out of my pajamas and brush my hair. It was very easy to fall into a well of self-pity, and little did I know how intensely I’d have to work to get out of its depths. But the depression wasn’t the worst part.

I lost my voices

As a child I thought it was normal to have people reading stories to me inside my head. Not schizophrenia voices, but the voice I’ve come to regard as the other pieces of my personality. They keep me company when I’m alone, they built stories to help me sleep, they drive my happy places and thoughts. They give life to the dreams inside my head.

When familiar things go missing, we experience many unsettling emotions, not the least of which is panic. I hate panic attacks, they leave me weak and nauseous but many times I have discovered that when I emerge on the other side, it’s as a stronger person. Whatever made me panic I have faced and survived through faith, work, and the assistance of those who love me best.

The voices are still there…

Lurking beneath the layers of worry and anger, waiting for me to get my mind organized again. I do best when I have a routine. Yes, I am a touch OCD, and when my mind is scattered, the best way to know is to look at my house. If there are neat piles of crap stacked nicely, I’m alright. If the stacks have spilled over and created their own forest on the dining room table, bring out the Valium, mama needs a rest.

But I’m on a journey, and journeys are not completed overnight. The chapter I am in now is one of the more difficult to predict where it will lead, and I must be alright with that, as I have little choice in my path right now. I must be willing to wait until I’m ready for the next stage. Do I like waiting? Um, no. Does any like waiting?

What I am learning however is to trust everything will resolve itself the way it is supposed to. I believe the book of my life was written long before I was born, and I’m simply waiting for the pages to turn again. It’s an interesting story to date, and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. Are there things I would change? Of course, but never the meat of the story.

And that brings us around to my empty head

Each piece that I’ve spent the past year working on is at that critical point of where do we go now, and honestly if I can’t tell the direction my own life needs to go, how can I interpret the fates and desires of a dozen or so fictional characters bumping around in various locations around the world, all kept inside my head and a few moleskin notebooks?

Nancy’s Best Author Advice:

So, I plod forward a few paragraphs at a time. It’s progress, and I am definitely not complaining. I will take them as they come and work them into sentences. Slowly but surely the pages of the stories in my life will creep forward. That is the direction I choose, and I thank all that is holy for the ability to do so.

In the end, that is all I need.

About Nancy:

Nancy Reece won her first writing contest in seventh grade, and a life long passion was awakened. Born in Pennsylvania, but raised in the South, Nancy studied Psychology at Wesleyan College in Macon Georgia and Computer Information Systems at Southern Polytechnical College. She is married, and lives in the Atlanta area along with two children, two dogs, and a cat. In her spare time she is very active in animal rescue, especially horses, and is on the Board of Directors for Blue Skies Riding Academy, a 501c3 equine rescue dedicated to rehabilitating and retraining horses which have been redeemed from slaughter pens and other abusive situations.

Barb Bettis Live your Dreams

Are You Devoted To One or Love the One…

Writing Can Be Like Dating

Barbara Bettis

Are your devoted to one or love the one you're withIn the past few weeks I’ve had an issue with my WIP. When I hit a major obstacle, I thought I’d try what several fellow authors do so successfully—work on another book to divert my thoughts and move back and forth between the two stories.

Some of my friends always have two books going at once, usually in different genres. It works for them beautifully, they say.

Well, I undertook beginnig another story. And learned that for me, writing is a lot like dating was when I was younger. I’m a one-boyfriend-at-a time kind ’a gal. And I learned it the hard way.

My roommates successfully juggled boyfriends with no problem. Surely I could do the same, I thought. So I found myself dating more than one guy—no serious relationships mind, just casual dates here and there. They were delightful boys, very different, and I liked them all.

Until they unexpectedly showed up to visit, all on the same night. To give them credit, they were perfect gentlemen and when each arrived a few minutes after the other, they all sat down to talk. My roommates saw what was happening and joined us to ease the tension. The third and last one brought ice cream. I did what any good hostess would do—I served it to everyone.

Later, my roommates thought it was all hilarious. I did not. I was stressed, I felt guilty and conflicted. I felt like a horrible person. And right then, my dating rules solidified. One at a time, no matter how casual.

That story does have a happy ending. All three guys called to ask me out again and I did date one throughout the summer until college started again in the fall.

Barb’s Best Tips

So how does that apply to writing more than one book at a time? I found myself getting completely wrapped up in the new story to the point I couldn’t concentrate on the first one. Which would take precedence? This switching back and forth didn’t work for me—when I was deep in the medieval mindset, getting back into the Regency rhythm took forever. When I was immersed in the Regency period, my medieval knights sounded way too sophisticated. And anachronistic. And I became conflicted.barb bettis

For those who can juggle more than one book at a time successfully, I have nothing but respect and awe. But I don’t see how you do it.

Barb’s latest is a medieval

THE LADY OF THE FOREST

Barb Bettis

Blurb:

He must pursue his enemy; she must protect her people. Can their love survive the duties that drive them apart?

When her elderly husband dies, Lady Katherine fakes her own death and disappears into the forest with others escaping the brutish new lord. Determined to protect her people, she knocks the wrong man senseless. But Lord Henry isn’t an enemy, he’s the brother of her childhood friend. Although his tender confidence tempts her, she’s bound by duty.

Henry of Chauvere has found the one lady he wants for his own, never mind she’s tied him hand and foot. When he learns the king has ordered her to wed Stonehill’s ruthless new master, he insists Kate seek haven with his sister. But she won’t desert her friends. Henry vows to solve her problem, provided he catches a traitor before the threat from Kate’s past catches her.

When a daring rescue compels Henry and Kate to join forces, their attraction grows into love. If only duty didn’t drive them apart.

But my most significant story was my own.

Wingless Butterfly shares a lifetime of secrets lies, romance, betrayal, and mystery like whispers from a best friend––A story that began with my mother’s haunting warning: “You don’t want to know your biological father, he’s the kind of man who pulls wings off of butterflies.”

Wingless Butterfly by Casi McLean

Take The Oxygen First

We’ve all heard the phrase before. Flight attendants explain daily why passengers should take oxygen themselves before administering to others. The command makes sense. Take care of yourself so you’re able to help others. When I thought about the simple phrase I realized the theory applies to life and love, too.

What’s Love Got To Do With It?

Red HeartI’m not advocating self-gratification. Especially in the all about me society we seem to live in these days. But when I feel good about myself––who and where I am emotionally and physically––I live happier, love better, and open a door to inspire and encourage others. Life and love thrives when filtered through internal contentment.

It’s All About Love

My friends know the impact secrets and lies held over my life and the metamorphosis that took place when I unraveled my past. But unveiling secrets didn’t transform me or my self-image. The shift occured when I realized my self-image grew from what I believed about myself. Beliefs that wern’t true. The bully in my mirror reflected a discarded child, tossed away by her own father. And the reflection reinforced my beliefs day after day.

The Perfect Time For Love

This is what I know about you and me, and everyone around us. Perception is reality. True or perceived, what we believe has incredible influence over our lives. So take time to know and understand what’s true and genuine about you…and your world. You, me, we all are united by a human distinction, we become who we believe we are, and we design our lives around what we believe is true.

Live Your Dreams

Live your dreams explodes from my website, whispers through my manuscripts, and bubbles from every engagement I pursue. That is the passion I live, and it’s all about love! My passion, my brand, and the force that drives me is etched into my books and my Internet presence.

When you see CASI MCLEAN, visit my website, follow my blogs, or read my books, I hope you’ll see a vision of inspiration, feel a sense of encouragement, and discover the value of your own self-worth. It’s all about love.

Beautiful Julia Roberts

Julia Agrees

I love this Facebook post from Julia Roberts: “Perfection is a disease of a nation. We overlay our faces with tons of make-up. We get botox and even starve ourselves to become that perfect size. We try to fix something, but you can’t fix what you can’t see. It’s the soul that needs the surgery.

How can you expect someone else to love you if you don’t love yourself? It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, what’s on the inside counts…I know I have wrinkles but look beyond that. Embrace the real me and you,––who you are, love yourself just the way you are.”

Live your Dreams

Writers Write…It’s Our Oxygen

“A rose by any other name…”

Writers Write. It’s Our Oxygen

peggy head shot

We’ve all read that quote before. It’s from the famous balcony scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet tragedy. I thought about this line recently when I was introduced to someone new, by a mutual acquaintance, as a “novelist.”

Hmmm, I thought at the time. That was a new one on me. Usually, when I introduce myself and I’m asked what I do, I say “I’m a writer.” That, of course, leads to the next question of what do you write, to which I respond, “Romantic Fiction.” Any series of questions or facial expressions meets that answer, and I could write a thesis on those responses alone.

But…

The reason the novelist descriptor set me a little back was because, (1) it sounded fairly classy and erudite – two things I am not! And (2) it kind of limited what I really do. Yes, I write novels; romantic novels. But I’m also a professional blogger, so being a novelist kind of defined me in a way I wasn’t quite comfortable with.

So, of course, this got me to thinking of all the ways in which writers are described.

Here are a few:

Writer ( of course!), author, novelist, essayist, satirist, humorist, biographer, journalist, scriptwriter, playwright, dramatist, poet, scribe, diarist.

I’m sure there are more, but for brevity’s sake, I’ll stop there. All those descriptions and terms denote one thing, though: the person performing them writes.

Which is what I do: write. The tag line to my website is WRITING IS MY OXYGEN because, to me, writing is like breathing. I can’t live without breathing now, can I? Well, writing makes me feel the same way. Even when I am sick ( as I am right now with the flu as I write this) I can’t go a day without putting something to paper – or laptop, for the sake of transparency .

I think of myself in many ways and as many things: mother, wife, nurse, cook, comic. But the one description that sums me up more than any other – in my opinion – is writer.

So. This is me: Peggy Jaeger, Writer. Nice to meet you.

Peggy’s Best Advice To Authors:

My most successful promo tip:  I recently joined TRIBERR and since I did, I have seen a doubling in my Twitter follows, which has led to a greater number of people viewing my daily blog. As a writer, this is one of the most worthwhile free promotions I have ever found on Social Media.
My most successful author tip was from the grand Dame of Romantic fiction herself, Nora Roberts. At a lecture I heard her say this: “A Writer never finds time to write. A writer makes it. If you don’t have the drive, the discipline and the desire, then you can have all the talent in the world but you are never going to finish a book.” True words. Sage advice.

About Peggy:

Peggy Jaeger is a contemporary romance author who writes about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them. She holds a master’s degree in Nursing Administration and first found publication with several articles she authored on Alzheimer’s Disease during her time running an Alzheimer’s in-patient care unit during the 1990s. A lifelong and avid romance reader and writer, she is a member of RWA and her local New Hampshire RWA Chapter.

 Cooking With Kandy

Sugar and spice and everything sexy make the perfect recipe for romance in this brand-new series by Peggy Jaeger. Look for exclusive recipes in each book!

Kandy Laine built her wildly popular food empire the old-fashioned way—starting with the basic ingredients of her grandmother’s recipes and flavoring it all with her particular brand of sweet spice. From her cookbooks to her hit TV show, Kandy is a kitchen queen—and suddenly someone is determined to poison her cup. With odd accidents and threatening messages piling up, strong-willed Kandy can’t protest when her team hires someone to keep her safe—but she can’t deny that the man for the job looks delicious. . .

Josh Keane is a private investigator, not a bodyguard. But with one eyeful of Kandy’s ebony curls and dimpled smile, he’s signing on to uncover who’s cooking up trouble for the gorgeous chef. As the attraction between them starts to simmer, it’s not easy to keep his mind on the job, but when the strange distractions turn to true danger, he’ll stop at nothing to keep Kandy safe—and show her that a future together is on the menu. . .

Live your Dreams

Today’s Dreams Build Tomorrow’s Castles

Today’s Dreams Build Tomorrow’s Castles

I love this inspirational piece by Claire Gem. And I truly believe today’s dreams build the foundation for tomorrow’s castles. Go, Claire!

My morning ritual: boot up computer, brew cup of coffee, check email, read horoscope.

Claire GemOkay, I admit it, I’m one of those people who believes the day just…won’t…go…right if I don’t read my damned daily horoscope. I know the words generated by whoever writes these daily doses of woo-woo are usually so generic, they can apply to anybody in any situation at any time.

No matter. I can’t start my day without my daily dose of woo-woo.

Every once in a while, though, I actually get smacked in the heart with a horoscope that resonates, deep down, somewhere in the murky depths of my creative soul. This one, recently, was especially inspiring.

The horoscope spoke of courage, and confidence, and defying self doubt. But it was the last line that got me: …today’s dreams are building the foundation for tomorrow’s castles.

I’ve always been a dreamer, and dreamers sometimes get a bad rap, because dreams don’t accomplish anything without action. Dedication, hard work, perseverance. But let’s face it, without the initiating dream, all that toil and trouble would have no impetus and no direction. Without our dreams to guide us toward a goal, we would float aimlessly about on the sea of life and never get anywhere, no matter how hard we work.

Now to share some of my personal tips:

What I’ve found to be the most useful promo tip, to remind not only the world but myself of my living, breathing authorial life, is to tweet a sentence from each of my books—often. No “buy my book” rant, just a snippet of description, dialogue, or action from each book, along with a buy link. I’ve noticed a pretty consistent record of a sale, or two, on the days I tweet, or the day after.

Right now, I’m in the final editing stages for my upcoming release, Spirits of the Heart, due out on Valentine’s Day. I’ve found that the only way—the only way—to find each and every typo or grammar glitch is to read it out loud. It’s amazing what you’ll hear coming out of your mouth that your eyes can’t see.

So I’m toiling for my castle. And every new sentence I type onto the page gets me one stone closer to realizing the dream.

Dream on!

Excerpt:

I woke in my ice tower, covered in a coating of sweat, lying next to a dead body.

With a gasp, I scrambled back against the headboard of my own bed. Other than the motionless figure beside me, nothing around me had changed, though it was tinted yellow from the flickering lanterns.

Arina’s dead body?

I’d never seen a corpse. Not a real one. I eyed the spike sticking out of her forehead and the odd snarl twisting her open mouth. My head swam and I swallowed convulsively.

I knew I needed to act, but all I could manage to do was let Arina continue to bleed out—onto the sheets and onto me. I should have been screaming. I should have been throwing myself off the bed and toward the window. But I didn’t, anchored in place by fire and sweat and blood.

I tried to connect the scene in front of me to some memory, something that swam barely out of reach. I stretched after it, catching a fragment: yesterday was Arina’s day. The day I wouldn’t be alone.

A pain day.

I looked forward to those. That much I knew.

Forcing myself to sit up, I scooted away from her still form, my jaw clenched with the memory of pain. I would have laughed at what lingered but there was a body to attend to. Stumbling out of bed, I stepped out of my clothes and limped toward my ivory dresser. On the way, my feet grazed against something rough. Some imperfection in the ice. Something that wasn’t there before.

I backed up and stared down at the message scratched into the ice, blood swiped across it to highlight the letters, like ink rubbed on a seal impression to darken the image.

She found me. She knows. Went to warn them. Don’t take the infusions. Watch out for Kip.

My body began to tremble, even before my mind caught up.

Yesterday.
