You never know just how much you touch the lives of those around you. I have heard people say over and over again that one man … or woman … can’t really make a difference. I’ve probably even said it on occasion myself, but I believe … YOU can make a difference and touch the lives of others, and in the process, you will enrich your own life. In today’s society and busy world, it is unusual to see simple acts of kindness and I am often taken back when someone extends them to me. Unexpected or unsolicited generosity is paying it forward. Years ago I read an anecdote entitled “The Starfish Story” and it has changed the way I look at what many people deem as insignificant.  I want to share it with you. The Starfish Story (unknown) There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn.  In the distance he saw a frail old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea.  The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water.  He asked “Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?”  The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.  “But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!” exclaimed the young man.  “How can you make any difference?”  The old man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety of the sea, he said, ” I can make a difference to this one!” Some could argue that one person rarely makes a difference in the scheme of things, but if I encouraged only one person, I just might make a profound difference in their life. Not only that, when I focus on other people and turn my attentions away from myself, I not only experience a profound joy in touching their lives, but I have less time to worry about my own troubles. I also see my problems in perspective and they are usually pretty insignificant compared to those of others. That knowledge leaves me with a sense of contentment in my own situations. Try it, and, in the process, you just might find your own life will be enriched. Casi
